Brittney Griner has pleaded guilty to drug charges and faces up to 10 years in prison.
The basketballer was arrested in Russia back in February after authorities allegedly found cannabis vape cartridges in her luggage.
The athlete said she had ‘no intent’ behind her actions. Her head coach Vanessa Nygaard, recently said:
“If it was LeBron, he’d be home, right?”
“It’s a statement about the value of women. It’s a statement about the value of a Black person. It’s a statement about the value of a gay person. All of those things. We know it, and so that’s what hurts a little more.”
The basketball player was found with 0.7 grams of THC in her system when she was detained by Russian police.
WNBA coach James Wade has shared his disappointment in the inaction from the US government, telling the Chicago Sun-Times:
“We have a woman who represents everything that we’re supposed to stand for that’s sitting in a prison.” He also stated, “And we’re just making posts. She’s played for our country and brought our country glory, and this is how we’re treating her. It’s disgusting.”
