Chris Rock’s mom Rose Rock has weighed in on the Oscars fiasco where Will Smith brutally slapped her son live on stage.
Rock made an insensitive remark about Jada Pinkett Smith, comparing her to G.I Jane – Jada has been open about her struggles with alopecia and didn’t appreciate being used as the punchline.
In the wake of this incident, Smith has since apologized to Rock, the Academy and his fellow nominees.
The comedian’s family members were quick to come to his defence and now Rose Rock has given her opinion in an interview with WIS TV.
She said:
“You reacted to your wife giving you the side-eye and you went and made her day because she was mulled over laughing when it happened,”
She told the outlet that at first she thought it was part of a bit they had planned ahead of time, but that once Smith “started using obscenities”, she knew it was real. She added:
“When he slapped Chris, he slapped all of us. He really slapped me,”
“No one even heard his speech. No one was able to just be in the moment because everyone was sitting there like, ‘What just happened?”
Rose reached out to her son after the incident and told him she was proud of the professional way he had handled the situation.
