CNN leaders were left “exasperated” after an intense on-air exchange between Don Lemon and GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, which reportedly played a role in Lemon’s surprising ouster from the cable news network, according to a recent report by The New York Times.

The fiery argument between Lemon and Ramaswamy took place during an episode of “CNN This Morning” last Wednesday and left several CNN leaders visibly frustrated, as Lemon’s visible irritability during the conversation on topics such as the civil rights movement, black Americans, and the Second Amendment became apparent, as disclosed by two sources cited by the paper.

In the footage of the interview, it was evident that producers were trying to advise Lemon through the heated debate, with Lemon himself expressing his inability to concentrate due to the distractions in his ear from the producers. “Please, I cannot keep a thought if you guys are talking in my ear,” Lemon said at one point during the segment.

Ramaswamy later told Fox News Digital that he believed the on-air confrontation “played a role” in CNN’s decision to let go of Lemon. Ramaswamy expressed his belief that networks promoting open debate should not restrict what someone can say based on their skin color and praised CNN’s decision as the right one.

Lemon, who is black, had previously expressed his offense at Ramaswamy “explaining to me what it’s like to be black in America,” referring to the GOP candidate’s attempt to discuss the civil rights movement. This on-air clash is the latest in a series of stories about Lemon’s alleged troubling behavior that has garnered attention in recent headlines.

One of Lemon’s notable missteps was his comments about Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, whom he described as “past her prime” at the age of 51. This statement was widely criticized as sexist by people from all sides, as Lemon also made remarks about women being in their prime only in their 20s, 30s, and maybe 40s. Additionally, Lemon has been reported to have sparred with his female co-hosts and belittled anchor Kaitlan Collins after being required to share the spotlight.

Following his abrupt firing from CNN, Lemon expressed his shock and disappointment, claiming to have been blindsided by the decision. In a statement on Twitter, Lemon wrote, “I was informed this morning by my agent that I have been terminated by CNN. I am stunned after 17 years at CNN I would have thought that someone in management would have the decency to tell me directly.” He further added, “At no time was I ever given any indication that I would not be able to continue to do the work I have loved at the network. It is clear that there are some larger issues at play.”

However, CNN has vehemently denied Lemon’s claim that he was not given notice about his firing. The situation continues to garner attention and speculation, with many analyzing the events leading up to Lemon’s departure from CNN and the controversies surrounding his behavior and statements.
