Sanjiv Ranjan Prasad and his wife Sadhana Prasad, who live in Haridwar city in the northern state of Uttarakhand, had ‘hopes of having a grandchild’ but after six years of marriage and “failure” to provide one, the couple are seeking compensation of Rs 50 million (around $645,465) if their son and his wife do not provide a grandchild over the next year.
Prasad told The Independent:
“We didn’t care about gender, just wanted a grandchild.”
According to Prasad, his daughter-in-law controls the couple’s finances, which has impacted them having a child, allegedly.
I gave my son all my money, got him trained in America. I don't have any money now. We have taken a loan from bank to build home. We're troubled financially& personally. We have demanded Rs 2.5 cr each from both my son & daughter-in-law in our petition: SR Prasad, Father pic.twitter.com/MeKMlBSFk1

This case portrays the truth of society. We invest in our children, make them capable of working in good firms. Children owe their parents basic financial care. The advocate representing Mr Prasad and his wife, AK Srivastava, told the publication:
“The couple has the freedom to not give birth to a child, which is why we are asking to be compensated.”
“The amount is just given the money Mr Prasad has spent on his son’s upbringing… such new cases are important as they lead to the formation of new laws.”
Many Twitter users commented that it was ‘obscene’ of them to expect grandchildren and that it is ‘completely normal’ for people to not want children.
