Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman claims she regrets misgendering Chandler’s trans parent.
The show was one of the biggest shows of the 90s and is still loved by many to this day.
Long time fans of the show will know that Chandler Bing had a trans parent who went by the stage name “Helena Handbasket”.
The character was played by Kathleen Turner, see below:

Chandler and the other characters would often refer to her as “Chandler’s father”. Her character was misgendered so much that there was even an episode titled “The One With Chandler’s Dad.”
Kauffman – who also created Grace and Frankie, said in an interview that she had regrets for how Helena was was treated in the show.
Speaking to BBC News, Kauffman said:
“Pronouns were not yet something that I understood, so we didn’t refer to that character as ‘she.’ That was a mistake.”
“I’ve learned a lot in the last 20 years,”
“Admitting and accepting guilt is not easy. It’s painful looking at yourself in the mirror. I’m embarrassed that I didn’t know better 25 years ago.”
Kauffman’s interview comes out July 11.
