Exciting news awaits fans of Netflix’s Wednesday series who were longing for a shift away from romantic storylines and a return to the core horror elements.
It appears that the second season of the popular TV show will veer in a different direction, as shared by Jenna Ortega, the talented actor behind the iconic character, Wednesday Addams.
Taking on a more active role in the show’s production, the 20-year-old Ortega discussed her approach to the upcoming season during Variety’s Actors on Actors series, emphasizing her commitment to the responsibility entrusted to her. Reflecting on her newfound role as a producer, she expressed, “This is my first time. It was a natural progression. With a character like Wednesday, who is so beloved, I didn’t want to get her wrong.” Recognizing the significance of the character, Ortega engaged in extensive conversations with the writers, determining what aspects worked and what needed to be discarded. She explained, “We’d decide what works and what doesn’t. In preparation for a second season, we wanted to make sure that we could start the conversations earlier.”
Eagerly anticipating the next chapter, Ortega voiced her curiosity, eagerly anticipating the costumes, new characters, and scripts that would shape the upcoming season. In a delightful exchange with Elle Fanning, who also embarked on her first television series production, Ortega shared her excitement, saying, “I’m just so curious. I want to see the outfits, new characters, scripts. It’s your first time producing a television series as well.”
One of the pivotal discussions centered around the direction the show would take in the second season. Ortega revealed, “We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror more. We’re ditching any romantic love interest, which is really great. We’re going to get bolder, more dark. I’ve never had to do a serious period piece before.”
This revelation isn’t the first time Ortega has hinted at a darker Wednesday Addams. Back in December of the previous year, when the show was the talk of the town, she expressed her desire to push her character further. Ortega shared with Entertainment Tonight, “I kind of want her to be darker. I want her to get more in the nitty-gritty of things and not play things so safe because there are a lot of lines about her saving the school and doing whatever, but for me, her main drive with the monster is of competitiveness. Kind of like, ‘Man, how’s this guy doing this?’ I think I want it to continue down an antihero stream rather than a typical hero.”
With Jenna Ortega’s involvement in shaping the second season of Wednesday, fans can expect a thrilling and chilling experience, delving deeper into the dark and mysterious world of the iconic character. The anticipation grows as viewers eagerly await the return of the series, bracing themselves for a bolder, edgier portrayal of Wednesday Addams.
