Icon Jim Carrey has condemned the Oscars audience for cheering Will Smith not long after he slapped Chris Rock over a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith‘s shaved head.
The now infamous slap took place at the Oscars awards ceremony on Sunday evening. Rock made an insensitive remark about Pinkett Smith, comparing her to G.I Jane – Jada has been open about her struggles with alopecia and didn’t appreciate being used as the punchline.
Carrey had a virtual interview with Gayle King for CBS Morning and he had this to say:
“I was sickened by the standing ovation,”
“I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse.”
LAPD had recently confirmed that Chris Rock will not be filing a police report, when King brought this up in the interview, Carrey responded:
“I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million,”
“That video is gonna be there forever. It’s gonna be ubiquitous. You know, that insult is gonna last a very long time.”
“You do not have the right to … smack somebody in the face because they said words,”
Powerful words from the legend.
