Johnny Depp has come under scrutiny for misgendering author iO Tillett Wright during the trial with ex wife Amber Heard.

People have taken to social media to call out the double standards between the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ actor and singer Lizzo.

The ‘About Damn Time’ singer released her latest album ‘Special’ on 15 July and fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts. The singer was quick to remove an ableist slur in her new song “Grrrls” after backlash online.

A clip of the actor misgendering the author in court has resurfaced, with some people pointing out the double standard of Depp misgendering a witness during the trial and not being reprimanded but Lizzo making strides to learn and change her language.

In the clip, Depp seemingly struggles over his choice of words when talking about Heard’s friend. He says:

“She was born a female, if that’s the right terminology these days,”

“Born a female, but she was, she had chosen, at a very young age, she decided that she was a male.”

One person wrote on Twitter:

“Funny how Lizzo used a slur in a song and had to remove it instantly for risk of being canceled, and yet Johnny can get away with constantly misgendering iO and calling him a lesbian slur in a text message.”

“Johnny Depp misgendering witness iO Tillet Wright for 2 minutes straight. iO is a trans man that testified he witnessed Johnny beating Amber.”

Some defended the actor, however:

“He referred to iO with the pronouns he used at the time that they knew each other and the time that the events he’s talking about took place.”

Watch Wright’s testimony below:

Wright testified in court that Depp’s use of drugs and alcohol would bring out a “very, very ugly side of him”.
