Margot Robbie has just become Hollywood’s highest-paid actress, thanks to her role as the iconic doll in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film, Barbie.
The film boasts a star-studded cast, with Ryan Gosling playing Ken, and multiple versions of Barbie living in Barbie Land.
However, things take an unexpected turn when Robbie’s Barbie is expelled from the dreamy realm and decides to relocate to the human world with Ken, rollerblades in hand.
Robbie’s performance as Barbie in the film earned her a whopping $12.5 million pay check, making it her highest-paid role to date.
Gosling reportedly received the same figure.
This is a significant increase from the $9-10 million pay cheque she received for returning as Harley Quinn in the spin-off film Birds of Prey, directed by Cathy Yan.
Filming for the Barbie movie wrapped last July, with Robbie’s co-star, Hari Nef, sharing a candid shot of the cast celebrating the end of production on Instagram.
The film also features a huge ensemble cast, with character posters recently released by Warner Bros giving fans more insights into who’s playing who.
While Robbie and Gosling’s roles were established early on, the posters introduced the other key players, including Will Ferrell, who portrays the CEO of a toy company.
The protagonist couple is surrounded by other Barbies and Kens, all with distinctive traits and personalities, such as Dua Lipa as mermaid Barbie, Emma Mackey as physicist Barbie, Issa Rae as president Barbie, and Nicola Coughlan as diplomat Barbie.
Meanwhile, Gosling is joined by Simu Liu as a rival Ken and Michael Cera as Ken’s best friend Allan.
The story is narrated by Helen Mirren, and the film is co-penned by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, marking their latest collaboration as writing partners after Frances Ha and Mistress America.
Barbie is set to hit cinemas on July 21.
The film promises to be a hilarious comedy with a star-studded cast, and fans can’t wait to see Robbie in her coveted role as the iconic doll.
