For the first time in 21 years, the Miss Universe crown is heading to India.

21-year-old, Harnaaz Sandhu, was announced as the winner of Miss Universe on Monday, beating Paraguay’s Nadia Ferreira and South Africa’s Lalela Mswane to the famous crown.

Check out the special moment below:

In her speech, she said:

Well, I think the biggest pressure the youth of today is facing is to believe in themselves. To know that you are unique and that’s what makes you beautiful, stop comparing yourselves with others, and let’s talk about more important things that’s happening worldwide. I think this is what you need to understand.

Come out, speak for yourself, because you are the leader of your life. You are the voice of your own [life]. I believe in myself and that’s why I’m standing here today. Thank you.

Sandhu also used her platform to talk about the climate crisis.

‘I totally feel that this is the time to take actions and talk less, because each action could either kill or save nature. Prevent and protect is better than repent and prepare.’

When she’s not taking part in Miss Universe, Sandhu is studying for a master’s degree in public administration.

She also has a huge Instagram following of just short of 1 million people, which is undoubtedly going to rise after her victory.
