Tragic news struck the K-pop world as Moonbin, a member of the popular group ASTRO, passed away at the tender age of 25.
The devastating news was confirmed by Fantagio Music, the agency that represents ASTRO, through an official statement on April 19 (April 20 in Korea), expressing deep sorrow and asking for privacy for Moonbin’s grieving family.
Moonbin, who was known by his mononymous stage name, had been an integral part of ASTRO since their debut in 2016.
He had recently renewed his contract with Fantagio Music in January 2023, along with his fellow ASTRO members, except for Rocky. Moonbin’s talent and passion for music had also shone through in his work as part of ASTRO’s first official subunit, Moonbin & Sanha.
The duo had released their first EP, In-Out, in 2020, and had just made a comeback in January 2023 with their third EP, Incense.
They were also in the midst of their first tour, the DIFFUSION tour, which had kicked off in Seoul on March 18 and 19, with plans to visit other cities in April and May, including Macau, Taipei, Jakarta, Tokyo, and Osaka.
The news of Moonbin’s untimely death came as a shock to fans and the K-pop community alike, especially as Moonbin & Sanha were announced as part of the lineup for the highly anticipated 29th Dream Concert on the same day.
The concert, which is scheduled to take place at Busan’s Asiad Main Stadium on May 27, features popular acts such as ITZY, NMIXX, and Dreamcatcher among others. As of now, organizers have not announced any changes to the lineup in light of Moonbin’s passing.
