MrBeast found himself in a position where he had to provide an explanation after being accused of fabricating an invitation he had allegedly received to board the Titan submersible vessel.
Tragedy struck when the submersible, operated by OceanGate, suffered a catastrophic implosion during its expedition to explore the remains of the Titanic on June 18, resulting in the loss of five lives. Individuals who had been slated to partake in the voyage shared their experiences following the incident, prompting MrBeast to enter the conversation on June 25. He shared a screenshot of an invitation he claimed to have received to join the submersible.
Accompanying the screenshot, the popular YouTuber, known as MrBeast but named Jimmy Donaldson in real life, wrote, “I was invited earlier this month to ride the Titanic submarine, I said no. Kind of scary that I could have been on it.”
The invitation supposedly came from someone who stated their intention to participate in the journey as well, writing, “I’m going to the Titanic in a submarine late this month. The team would be stoked to have you along.”
Although MrBeast did not disclose the sender’s identity, it appears that the individual did not ultimately go on the trip, as the YouTuber has since maintained communication with them following the submersible implosion.
Shortly after MrBeast shared the post, Twitter users grew skeptical and began questioning why the message box in his screenshot was displayed in blue, whereas messages received on iPhones typically appear in green.
One person inquired, “Wait, why is the text receipt blue? Why are you making this up?” Another added, “How did you manage to receive a blue message on iMessage?”
A Twitter user further commented, “Uhm, blue messages are the messages you send.” In response to the mounting skepticism, MrBeast offered an explanation for the blue message, asserting that he was telling the truth. He clarified, “My friend sent me the screenshot of when he invited me. Didn’t think to scroll up and screenshot our old texts myself.”
Despite MrBeast’s explanation, some Twitter users remained unconvinced, urging Donaldson to scroll through the messages and share his side of the conversation as additional evidence.
MrBeast’s claim emerged alongside the revelation that former soap opera star Ross Kemp was also among those who had the opportunity to embark on a trip aboard the Titan.
Kemp had made plans to participate in a documentary expedition to visit the Titanic last year; however, the production company ultimately deemed the mission too risky.
In light of the submersible implosion, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
