Netflix fans have been left terrified by the 2020 horror film, His House, with some saying they had to switch it off because it “scared the hell” out of them.
Starring Doctor Who’s Matt Smith and Luther actress Wunmi Mosaku, the movie is about a young couple seeking asylum in England after fleeing war-torn South Sudan.
However, their new home is haunted by a sinister force that torments them.
Viewers have been taking to social media to express their fear, with one saying: “I am in here literally screaming in broad daylight watching.”
Another admitted, “Just had to turn His House off because it scared me too much. I’ll finish it tomorrow in the daylight. Haven’t been that freaked out since The Babadook.”
Despite the fear factor, some viewers have been praising the film and Mosaku’s performance.
One fan wrote, “This movie got me shaking. I’m legit scared,” while another said, “I finally watched His House yesterday on Netflix and…first off it scared the hell out of me at certain points…2nd…I love Wunmi Mosaku, she is an excellent actress and I can’t wait to see her in more things. This film is a MUST watch. I can’t recommend it enough.”
His House has been praised by critics for its ability to blend horror with social commentary on the refugee crisis.
The Guardian called it “a rare horror film with a moral conscience,” while IndieWire said, “His House is an effective haunted house movie with a more ambitious agenda than scaring its audience.”
The film has also been recognized with multiple award nominations, including the BAFTA Awards for Best British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Mosaku won the British Independent Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film.
His House is just one of many horror movies on Netflix that have been keeping viewers up at night. Other popular scary movies on the streaming service include Bird Box, The Ritual, and Hush. For those brave enough to take on the horror genre, His House is available to stream on Netflix now.
