Netflix has been home to some of the most popular horror movies in recent years, with one particular movie that stands out for its sheer terror.
Eerie, a Filipino horror flick that was originally released in 2018, has gained new attention online for its ability to terrify viewers.
The movie has been dubbed as this year’s scariest movie and is being praised for its genre-defining moments.
Set in an all-girls Catholic school, Eerie tells the story of a student who commits suicide, leading other students to claim that they are being haunted by her spirit.
When a clairvoyant guidance counsellor played by Bea Alonzo, investigates, she discovers more about the school’s dark history.
The rest of the 100-minute movie sees scary nuns and shadowy monsters terrify viewers to the point where some took to social media to complain.
One viewer called it “a masterclass in Philippine horror filmmaking genre,” while another admitted, “I’m too scared that I keep on screaming and covering half of my eyes while watching.” Another viewer even confessed, “now I don’t know if I can sleep tonight.”
Eerie is not the only horror movie on Netflix to have shaken up viewers.
Spanish horror film Don’t Listen was also deemed too terrifying by viewers, with some likening it to a Spanish version of The Conjuring.
Meanwhile, bone-chilling entry The Strays kept Netflix subscribers on the edge of their sofas, as it was branded the ‘best film of the year’.
One terrified viewer wrote, “If you’re trying to sleep well tonight, don’t watch The Strays right before bed.” Another stunned viewer tweeted, “I think I’m scarred for life because what the hell did I just watch?”
As horror movies become more sophisticated in their storytelling and visuals, they also become more terrifying for viewers. The fear of the unknown and the ability to manipulate emotions with sound and lighting make horror movies a thrilling genre for audiences.
