Nicki Minaj, the 40-year-old rapper, recently graced the cover of Vogue magazine’s December issue, showcasing elegance in various outfits. In a candid interview, she shared her thoughts on the body positivity movement, expressing disapproval when it promotes “unhealthy bodies.”
“I’m not in favor of body positivity if it means unhealthy bodies. That’s bull. It’s not believable, so let’s stop pretending,” Minaj told Vogue. She emphasized the importance of embracing one’s body, whether curvy or not, while acknowledging her own journey with body image. Despite having undergone a recent breast reduction, she emphasized the need to love oneself, curves or non-curves.
Reflecting on her past desire for a larger butt, Minaj admitted, “I used to want a bigger butt, and now I look back and realize how silly that was. So – love your curves, and love your non-curves. There’s nothing wrong with any of it.”
She recognized the challenges of accepting one’s body, sharing her own experience of looking at a video from her 25-year-old self and realizing the growth and acceptance she has achieved.
Minaj added, “I have to say this as a Black woman, though. I’ve made certain choices for my son, to not give him sweets and candy and juices, because of illnesses like diabetes that run in our community,”.
“I’ve had a lot of time to figure myself out. The idea of accepting what you can’t change – it just never clicked with me before. Now I understand,” she shared.
Currently working on her fifth album, “Pink Friday 2,” Minaj described it as a return to her original style. The album, set to be released in December, features the single “Last Time I Saw You,” which Minaj described as a “happy-sad” song. Despite her desire for the song to evoke happiness, she drew a parallel with Adele’s emotional impact, acknowledging the power of music to elicit complex emotions.
As the best-selling female rapper of all time, Minaj’s career spans an impressive 13 years. Reflecting on her musical journey, she shared her intention to rediscover her authentic self in this upcoming album. “When I revisit much of my music, I think, ‘Where was the real me in it?’ So, for this album, I’ve gone back to my old approach,” she reflected.
“Pink Friday 2” is scheduled for release on December 8, promising a return to Nicki Minaj’s roots and a continuation of her impactful career in the music industry.
