Ricky Gervais has revealed the Jada Pinkett Smith joke he’d have told at the Oscars instead, but it didn’t centre around her hair.
The Academy Awards ended up on chaos after Will Smith walked on stage and slapped Chris Rock in the face, following the comedian’s insensitive comparison of the actor’s wife to G.I. Jane, given her shaved head.
Pinkett Smith has been open about her struggles with alopecia recently and didn’t appreciate being the butt of the joke.
The actor has since apologized for his behaviour, to The Academy and Rock himself.
In a report from the Mirror, Gervais who was testing out his new material at a show in London’s Highgate, commented that he didn’t have any Will Smith related material and was wondering why his name trended when he didn’t even attend the awards.
However, the comedian made a joke that he may name his new tour after the hair loss condition that Pinkett Smith has. He said:
“What has it got to do with me? People were going, ‘What would have happened if Ricky Gervais had been doing it (hosting Oscars)?'”
“I would have made a joke about her boyfriend,”
“This new material is going to be for my new show called Armageddon. I might change that to Alopecia.”
