Russian troops have been trapped in a 40-mile-long convoy in armoured military tanks and heavy weaponry, near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv for days.
Facing sub-zero temperatures over night, Ukraine is forecast to drop to -10C over the next few days, with snowfall.
Temperatures are forecast to dip even lower to -20C on Wednesday thanks to easterly winds combined with arctic air.
With such icy conditions incoming, living conditions are expected to become even more difficult for the Russian troops who remain stuck in the large convoy of iron Russian tanks that have scarcely moved and been stuck around 19 miles away from the centre of Kyiv.
If the soldier are not running the engines, the tanks will act as huge refrigerators and would force them to flee, senior defence expert at the Baltic Security Foundation, Glen Grant, told Newsweek:
“A metal tank is just a fridge at night if you are not running the engine,”
“the boys [Russian troops] won’t wait, they will get out, start walking to the forest, and give themselves up”
“You just can’t sit around and wait because if you are in the vehicle you are waiting to be killed. They are not stupid.”
According to the US defence officials, the convoy hasn’t moved in the last few days.
A senior US defence official told reporters on Sunday:
“There does not appear to be any significant movement along the russian axes,”
The reasons for this could be due to a mechanical problem, fuel supply issued and/or mounting Ukrainian resistance.
Russia has been advancing into Ukraine during the invasion that was declared by President Vladimir Putin on 24th February. So far, Russia has captured Kherson in the south and has inclosed on the strategic port city of Mariupol.
Meanwhile, Putin has announced which countries Russia deems ‘unfriendly’ due to resistance against the country during this invasion.
