The Simpsons has been running since what feels like 1862, and now after 140,872,712,912,874,182 episodes, fans finally have a gay romance.
If you’re a fan of the show, you’ll know that Smithers came out as gay in an episode in 2016, and since then we’ve been waiting for him to find love.
Well, the wait is over.
In the episode titled ‘Portrait Of A Lackey On Fire’, Smithers finally finds love with a fashion designer.
The synopsis reads:
“Smithers finds true love with a famous fashion designer, but will his new relationship destroy Springfield?”
Simpsons writer Rob LaZebnik was inspired by his own son, Johnny, to write the episode, and even got his son to co-write it.
Johnny spoke to the New York Post:
“So often, gay romances are a subplot or alluded to or shown in some kind of montage or as a punchline.
“And what I think I was really excited about, with this episode, we get to see – without spoiling too much – the beginning, middle and who knows how it ends of a gay relationship, of really getting into the nitty-gritty of how gay people date, how they meet, what it’s like.”
“That was really special to me to get to highlight characters who are not punchlines, who are fully formed.”
The historic episode will air on November 21.
