Fans of The hit HBO show The Last of Us, which is based on the eponymous video game, have expressed their disappointment as the season finale has been revealed to be the shortest episode of the season.

The show premiered earlier this year to widespread acclaim and has garnered a near-perfect 9.1 rating on IMDB and a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

For those unfamiliar with the show, it is set in 2023, two decades after a mass fungal infection has turned most of the world’s population into zombie-like creatures.

The story follows Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, who is tasked with smuggling Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, across a post-apocalyptic United States, as she is immune to the infection and could be instrumental in creating a vaccine.

The ninth and final episode of the season will air on Sunday in the US and on Monday in the UK.

However, fans have been left disappointed as the episode has been revealed to be just 43 minutes long, the shortest of the season. Many fans took to Twitter to express their frustration. One fan tweeted, “The last episode of The Last of Us should be 90 mins instead of 45. Especially considering that this season was super short and next season will be the end of the series.” Another fan wrote, “I know I did not just read TLOU episode 9 is 43 minutes long, like, add an hour.”

The news of the episode’s runtime has led fans to speculate on the future of the series. One fan tweeted, “I kinda feel like they’re gonna announce The Last of Us three game at the end of season two.” Another fan commented, “Me wondering how the storyline is gonna go for episode 9 of #tlou because it’s 45 minutes long but getting ready to defend everything about it.”

Despite fans’ disappointment, it has been confirmed that a second season of the show is already in the works.
