Amelia Goldsmith, a TikToker from London, had a heartfelt plan to spread kindness by paying for a stranger’s groceries during a trip to a nearby Sainsbury’s.
Her intention was to make someone’s day and bring some cheer into their lives. However, her well-intentioned gesture didn’t go as planned, and she ended up in tears.
Before heading into the store, Goldsmith expressed her nervousness, saying, “I just hope they don’t look at me thinking I’m some weirdo.”
She documented her experience in a video that has been viewed over 800,000 times.
In the video, Goldsmith can be seen approaching different shoppers, offering to pay for their groceries.
However, she faces repeated rejections.
One man at the checkout declined her offer, saying, “No, no, no. I really don’t need it.”
A woman also politely refused, saying, “There’s a lot more deserving people, but thank you.”
The series of rejections took a toll on Goldsmith, and she broke down in tears on camera.
After her unsuccessful attempts to pay for strangers’ groceries, Goldsmith decided to give back in another way.
She donated pasta and sauces to the store’s food bank bin, saying, “Weird turnout, but I’m still really happy that the food can go to those who really need it. I’m just really overwhelmed right now, I don’t know what’s going on.”
Viewers of the video were quick to point out that Goldsmith had chosen a Sainsbury’s located in Balham, a relatively affluent area of London.
Some viewers speculated that people may have refused her offer because they felt awkward about being filmed.
One comment read, “Lovely gesture, but remember you don’t need to film a good deed to be valid.”
Another viewer suggested, “Maybe coz you were filming it idk, if someone offered to do something for me but has their phone in their hand, idk.”
Despite the mixed reactions, there were also many supportive comments.
One commenter praised Goldsmith for her pure intentions, saying, “You should be so proud of your pure intentions, no one can take away your intentions from you, and you should be so proud of yourself for this.”
Another fan wrote, “You can buy my food shop any day.”
Another suggestion from a supporter was to give the money to the cashiers to anonymously cover the next person’s bill, as some people might feel awkward or uncomfortable with being approached directly.
In the end, Goldsmith’s gesture may not have gone exactly as planned, but her genuine intention to spread kindness and make a positive impact is commendable.
She chose to give back in a different way and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to help those in need.
Despite the challenges and unexpected outcome, Goldsmith’s act of kindness serves as a reminder of the power of generosity and compassion in our communities.
