If you’re worried about alien abductions, where you live might actually matter. A new report using data from the National UFO Reporting Center and media sources has pinpointed the top 10 U.S. states with the highest number of reported UFO sightings—and some of the results might surprise you.
Coming in at number 10 is Nevada, followed closely by Colorado. Both states report one sighting for every 1,700 people. Arizona lands in seventh place, with Pennsylvania just ahead, showing that UFO activity isn’t limited to the desert Southwest. But things start to heat up in the top five, with big numbers coming from major states.

New York clocks in at number five with over 6,000 sightings—roughly one for every 1,301 residents. Oregon follows, with a rate of one sighting for every 1,156 people. Florida grabs the third spot, with more than 11,000 reported encounters, including footage of unidentified objects moving at staggering speeds over beaches.

Washington state takes second place, with over 7,000 reported sightings since the 1970s. But topping the list by a wide margin is California, dubbed the “UFO capital of America,” with a staggering 36,286 reported sightings since 1974. That breaks down to about one sighting for every 1,075 residents.
So whether you’re in the Pacific Northwest, along the East Coast, or chilling near the Hollywood Hills, there’s one clear takeaway—keep your eyes on the sky.
