In a tragic incident that has shocked the Humboldt, Tennessee community, a 12-year-old girl has been charged with the murder of her 8-year-old cousin, Demeria Hollingsworth. The event occurred on July 15 while both girls were staying at their grandmother’s house. Surveillance footage revealed the older girl allegedly suffocating Hollingsworth with bedding while she slept in the top bunk of their shared bed. Following this act, the girl attempted to cover up the crime by cleaning the scene and repositioning the body.
The Gibson County District Attorney, Frederick Agee, described the footage as one of the most disturbing and violent acts his office has ever encountered. The violence reportedly stemmed from an argument over an iPhone, a detail disclosed by Demeria’s grieving mother, Rayana Smith. Smith expressed deep regret for not having taken her daughter home earlier, believing they were just having a fun summer.
Demeria Hollingsworth was remembered as a sweet, vibrant child who loved reading, swimming, and playing outside. Her mother has since started a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses, describing the immense pain of losing her daughter and the need to stay strong for her surviving child. The campaign has raised over $13,000 so far.
Due to the severity of the crime, Prosecutor Agee plans to request that the case be transferred to Circuit Court, allowing the girl to be tried as an adult. This could result in a harsher sentence, reflecting the gravity of the act. The 12-year-old faces charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. A candlelight vigil was held over the weekend in honor of Demeria, with neighbors and pastors offering support to the grieving family.
