The Donnelly family from Northern Ireland, once recognized as the world’s oldest family by Guinness World Records, credits their long lives to a unique lifestyle choice. With a combined age of 1,075 years, the 13 siblings—aged between 71 and 93—stood out for their impressive health and longevity. The family’s secret? They have never consumed alcohol.

Their wholesome diet also played a major role. Raised in Collegeland, the Donnellys maintained a tradition of eating homegrown apples and porridge twice daily, a habit instilled by their father. The siblings believed their locally sourced food, including a nightly bowl of warm oats with apple jam, rivaled the celebrated Mediterranean and Japanese diets.

Family Handout

Leo Donnelly, 71, explained that avoiding alcohol was pivotal to their health. Scientific studies back this up, linking sobriety to lower risks of high blood pressure, better liver function, and improved nutrient absorption. The family also credited their active lifestyle, working the land, and playing Gaelic football.

Sadly, three of the 16 Donnelly siblings have passed away, but the family’s story continues to inspire. Their simple, mindful habits and commitment to sobriety serve as a testament to the benefits of a clean, active life.
