A 30-year-old woman was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, after being caught with 68 bullets of suspected cocaine in her stomach. The woman had flown in from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and was detained immediately after landing. Authorities had received a tip-off about her involvement in drug trafficking and, upon her arrival, a medical X-ray revealed the foreign objects inside her body.
The woman, under police guard, began to “release” the cocaine bullets, which totaled around 850 grams. National police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe confirmed her arrest and that she is under custody. The exact value of the drugs is still being determined, as the process to remove all the suspected cocaine from her body continues.
She is scheduled to appear in court on September 25 to face charges of drug dealing and possession. This arrest marks the 10th drug mule intercepted at the airport in the last two months, during which over $690,000 worth of drugs have been seized. Authorities have emphasized their commitment to cracking down on drug trafficking and organized crime at the airport.
South Africa’s National Commissioner of Police, General Fannie Masemola, praised the police force’s efforts, stating that the country is not a “playground for criminals.” He emphasized that they are working hard to prevent criminal activities and warned that they are leaving no stone unturned in their fight against crime.
