During the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Al Roker accidentally revealed a major spoiler about the upcoming Wicked movie. While speaking with Idina Menzel, who originated the role of Elphaba on Broadway, Roker mentioned her cameo in the film, saying, “You had a cameo in Wicked, in the movie.” Menzel playfully scolded Roker, responding, “You’re not supposed to tell anyone about the cameo! Cat’s out of the bag.”
Menzel confirmed that she and Kristin Chenoweth, who starred alongside her in the original Broadway production, appear in the movie as members of a theater troupe in the Emerald City. Their performance is tied to the song “One Short Day,” as the characters Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) arrive in Oz to meet the Wizard.
Roker defended himself, noting that many details about the movie have already been shared online. Menzel, however, emphasized her pride in being part of the film and its connection to the legacy of Wicked. She praised the adaptation for respecting and expanding the story’s original vision.
The Wicked movie has already become a box office hit, earning $114 million domestically during its opening weekend. Fans of the musical and newcomers alike are eagerly awaiting its continuation in Part Two.
