The Boston Celtics have officially been sold for a record-breaking $6.1 billion, making it the most expensive franchise sale in North American sports history. The deal surpasses the previous record set in 2023 when Josh Harris purchased the Washington Commanders for $6.05 billion.
The winning bid came from Bill Chisholm, managing partner of Symphony Technology Group and a lifelong Celtics fan. The sale was prompted by longtime owner Wyc Grousbeck’s decision to offload his 51% controlling stake as part of “estate and family planning considerations.” Grousbeck originally purchased the team in 2002 for $360 million and will remain as team governor until 2028 when the full transition is complete.

The Celtics, fresh off their 2024 NBA Championship win against the Dallas Mavericks, went on the market shortly after their Finals victory. Chisholm, a Massachusetts native and Dartmouth graduate, now takes control of one of the most storied franchises in NBA history.
Neither the Celtics nor Chisholm have publicly commented on the sale yet, but with a new ownership era beginning, fans will be watching closely to see what changes—if any—are in store for the legendary team.
