Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has advanced to the finals in the women’s 66kg Olympic boxing competition after defeating Thai boxer Janjaem Suwannapheng in the semi-final match. Despite her victory, Khelif has been embroiled in controversy following her disqualification from the 2023 World Championships due to failing an unspecified gender eligibility test. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has since reaffirmed her eligibility for the Paris 2024 Olympics, stating that all athletes comply with the competition’s regulations based on their passports.

Khelif, who was born and raised as a girl and is listed as female in her passport, addressed the controversy and urged people to uphold Olympic principles and refrain from bullying athletes. “It can destroy people, it can kill people’s thoughts, spirit and mind. It can divide people,” she said. Khelif expressed hope that winning a gold medal would be the best response to the situation, adding, “God willing, this crisis will culminate in a gold medal, and that would be the best response.”

Throughout the ordeal, Khelif has remained focused on her goal of winning a medal. She stated, “I came here for a medal, and to compete for a medal. I will certainly be competing to improve (and) be better, and God willing.” Her determination and resilience have been evident as she continues to compete at the highest level despite the controversy surrounding her eligibility.

The IOC’s statement supporting Khelif’s participation emphasized that “every person has the right to practice sport without discrimination.” The committee confirmed that Khelif and all athletes participating in the boxing tournament comply with the applicable medical and eligibility regulations set by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit.

Khelif’s journey to the finals has not only been a testament to her skill and determination but also a significant moment in the ongoing discussions about gender eligibility in sports. As she prepares for the final match, Khelif remains a symbol of perseverance and the fight for equality in athletics.
