Disney has faced significant backlash after confirming it removed a transgender character’s storyline from the upcoming Pixar animated series Win or Lose. The series, which centers on a middle school softball team gearing up for their championship game, debuts February 19, 2025, on Disney+. According to reports, the decision eliminated dialogue referencing the character’s gender identity while keeping the character in the show. Disney stated they aimed to allow parents to discuss such topics with their children at their own pace.

The move sparked disappointment from 18-year-old actress Chanel Stewart, who had been cast in the role at age 14. She expressed that the storyline held personal and societal importance, sharing her hope that it would empower transgender youth. Leaked storyboards revealed that the storyline depicted her character Kai receiving support from her coach during a moment of dysphoria, an element now removed.

Stewart’s mother also voiced concern, emphasizing the importance of representation for the LGBTQ+ community. She called the decision a setback for progress in supporting transgender individuals. The controversy follows similar criticisms aimed at Disney for decisions involving LGBTQ+ storylines in Inside Out 2 and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, amid broader scrutiny of the company’s animated content.

While Disney has included LGBTQ+ themes in productions for older audiences, animated films for younger viewers have encountered resistance. Previous attempts, such as Lightyear and Strange World, faced mixed reception at the box office, potentially influencing this decision. Despite the criticism, Win or Lose is expected to benefit from Disney’s recent animation successes, including the record-breaking performance of Inside Out 2.
