Dr. Joseph Salhab recently shared insights on TikTok about why some people feel the need to poo immediately after eating, a common occurrence that’s often misunderstood. According to Dr. Salhab, this sensation isn’t because food is moving rapidly through the digestive system. Instead, it’s linked to the gastrocolic reflex, a natural physiological response where the stretching of the stomach after eating sends signals to the brain. These signals then trigger the colon to contract, making room for the incoming food.
This reflex is typically stronger in the morning, particularly after breakfast, which is why many people experience the urge to use the bathroom shortly after their first meal of the day. Dr. Salhab emphasized that this response is usually normal and doesn’t indicate any underlying health issues. However, for individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the gastrocolic reflex can be more intense, leading to symptoms like abdominal cramping and even diarrhea.
IBS sufferers are more sensitive to these contractions, and certain foods can exacerbate their symptoms. Dr. Salhab pointed out that fizzy drinks, sugary beverages, alcohol, dairy, fried foods, and some citrus fruits are common triggers that can worsen the effects of the gastrocolic reflex. These foods and drinks can make the colon’s contractions more powerful, increasing discomfort for those with IBS.
