A doctor has warned men about the potential health risks of excessive self-pleasure, especially when it becomes compulsive or is tied to unhealthy pornography consumption. Dr. Donald Grant, a senior clinical advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, explained that while moderate self-pleasure can relieve stress, improve sleep, and elevate mood, overindulgence may lead to physical and mental health issues. One major concern is “porn-induced erectile dysfunction” (PIED), where frequent consumption of explicit content can desensitize men, making it harder to maintain real-life intimacy.

Dr. Grant shared that this desensitization could lead to reduced sexual satisfaction, decreased sensitivity, and even friction damage if self-pleasure becomes too frequent or aggressive. He reassured that the loss of sensitivity is often temporary and can be improved by taking breaks and using lubricants. However, untreated, it can cause long-term intimacy problems.

Aside from the physical issues, Dr. Grant emphasized the mental toll it can take. Over-masturbation can cause performance anxiety, particularly when coupled with reliance on pornography. This may lead to decreased sexual interest in partners and create tension in relationships. Dr. Grant encourages men to monitor their habits to ensure it doesn’t disrupt their daily lives, work, or relationships.

Addressing this issue openly with a partner is also vital. Open communication can help ease anxieties and aid in overcoming PIED, along with seeking professional advice when necessary. The key takeaway is that moderation and mindfulness are important in maintaining a healthy sexual life.
