Doctors are warning that Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a virus distinct from the flu, is causing significant illness in children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals as cases surge globally, including in China. While both conditions share symptoms like coughing, fever, and fatigue, HMPV primarily affects the upper respiratory system and can lead to more severe conditions like pneumonia and bronchitis in vulnerable groups. In contrast, the flu often has whole-body symptoms like chills, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting and diarrhea.
HMPV, first identified in 2001, is common, with most people contracting it by age five and experiencing it repeatedly throughout life. Experts emphasize that while the virus is not new or as severe as COVID-19, good hygiene practices like handwashing and covering coughs can help reduce its spread.
Though HMPV symptoms overlap with colds or the flu, experts stress that the flu tends to feel more debilitating and widespread throughout the body. Flu symptoms are typically more severe, with additional signs like headaches and muscle pain, which are less common in HMPV cases.
Doctors recommend staying home if you have respiratory symptoms, especially to protect vulnerable populations. Wearing masks in public spaces and maintaining hygiene are simple ways to prevent the spread of both viruses during peak seasons.
