Elon Musk has claimed that the massive cyberattack on X (formerly Twitter) originated from the “Ukraine area,” though he admitted that the exact source remains uncertain. Thousands of users experienced outages on March 10, with Musk initially suggesting that either a large, coordinated group or a state-backed entity was responsible.
Speaking on Fox Business Network, Musk stated that X faces cyber threats daily but described this attack as being executed with significant resources. His comments come amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine, as well as Musk’s own criticism of Ukrainian leadership. Over the weekend, Musk claimed that Ukraine’s entire front line would collapse without his Starlink satellite service, and he recently called U.S. Senator Mark Kelly a “traitor” for supporting further military aid to Ukraine.
While Musk’s claim has sparked controversy, cybersecurity experts have backed the idea that X suffered a large-scale denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. Alp Toker, director of Netblocks, stated that the outages were among the longest X has experienced and were consistent with past cyberattacks rather than an internal system failure.
Musk’s comments are likely to fuel further political tensions, especially as the U.S. reconsiders its stance on military aid to Ukraine. Whether the attack was indeed linked to Ukraine or another entity remains under investigation.
