Elton John once revealed his candid thoughts about Michael Jackson in his 2019 memoir, Me, describing the late singer as “a disturbing person to be around.” Reflecting on their interactions over the years, Elton noted that while Jackson was an “adorable kid” when they first met, he changed significantly in later years, becoming increasingly isolated and distant from reality. Elton speculated that Jackson’s shift in behavior might have been influenced by prescription drug use, comparing it to the way Elvis Presley distanced himself from the world.
According to Elton, Jackson’s mental health appeared to deteriorate, leading him to avoid the company of adults, preferring to be around children instead. Elton did not directly address the abuse allegations against Jackson, but he suggested that Jackson struggled to cope with adult interactions. He admitted that every time he saw Jackson later in life, he was left feeling that the iconic performer had “totally lost his marbles” and was genuinely mentally unwell.
This perspective came at a time when the world was still grappling with the revelations from the Leaving Neverland documentary, which revisited the sexual abuse allegations against Jackson. Despite these serious accusations, Elton’s memoir focused on Jackson’s erratic behavior and his detachment from reality rather than commenting on the legal issues.
Jackson passed away in 2009 from a propofol and benzodiazepine overdose, leaving behind three children: Prince, Paris, and Bigi. His public memorial was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, followed by a private service. Elton’s reflections add another layer to the complex legacy of Michael Jackson, portraying a once-beloved figure who became increasingly troubled as he aged.
