As No Nut November (NNN) continues, experts have weighed in on the potential health benefits of abstaining from sex and masturbation, even for a short period. The challenge, which has gained popularity over the years, claims to improve mental health and increase sperm count. While opinions on the benefits vary, some studies suggest brief abstinence could be beneficial.
One study found a 145.7% increase in testosterone levels after seven days of abstinence, potentially improving mood, sexual function, and muscle mass. However, this study was later retracted due to similarities with a previous publication. Another study from 2019 indicated that abstaining for one to four days can enhance sperm count, movement, and volume.
Despite these findings, long-term abstinence might not yield additional benefits and could negatively impact relationships and mental health. Urologist Dr. Rena Malik cautions against prolonged abstinence, noting it may lead to issues like “blue balls.”
Ultimately, sex educator Reed Amber emphasizes that healthy masturbation frequency varies for each person, ranging from once a month to multiple times a day, depending on individual needs and mental state.
