The discovery of alleged “alien mummies” in Peru continues to fuel speculation and debate among experts and the public. The controversy began when veteran journalist and UFO researcher Jaime Maussan presented two of these mummies to Mexico’s congress in September. Recently, Joshua McDowell, a former Colorado prosecutor, examined one of these specimens, known as Maria, with assistance from three independent forensic medical examiners from the United States. McDowell noted that the fingerprints on Maria did not resemble traditional human patterns, which has only added to the intrigue surrounding these mysterious remains.
Despite the unusual fingerprints, McDowell urged caution, stating that it is “extremely premature” to draw definitive conclusions about the mummies’ origins. He suggested that the preservation method could account for the straight fingerprint patterns, though he admitted this explanation remains “very odd.” The mummies, covered in diatomaceous earth, a substance made from fossilized algae, feature elongated heads and three-fingered hands, which some argue are indicative of extraterrestrial origins.

Interesting piece about the fingerprints of the #NazcaMummies
This is the mummy Maria (pictured). Her toes have a similar pattern-no loops, whorls or arches…just these nearly straight lines. pic.twitter.com/oo9xY30PIN
The debate over the mummies’ authenticity is intense. While Maussan staunchly defends the specimens as extraterrestrial, many scientists and officials dismiss them as elaborate hoaxes. In January, Peruvian authorities labeled the mummies as “dolls” constructed from materials like paper, glue, metal, and bones from both humans and animals. Forensic archaeologist Flavio Estrada and historian Christopher Heaney have argued that the mummies could be remnants of pre-Columbian head-shaping practices in Peru.
As the investigation continues, no official determination has been made about the nature of these humanoid bodies. McDowell remains dedicated to uncovering the truth, having brought in experts from Denver and Maryland to aid in the study. The debate highlights the enduring fascination with potential extraterrestrial life and the complexities of distinguishing between genuine discoveries and clever fabrications.
