Witnesses to the tragic Jeju Air crash at South Korea’s Muan International Airport recounted harrowing moments of explosions and fire as the Boeing 737-800 attempted an emergency landing. The crash, which has claimed the lives of 177 passengers, occurred after the aircraft reportedly experienced a bird strike, leading to landing gear failure. Eyewitness Cho described a flash of light followed by a loud bang and a “series of explosions,” while others reported seeing sparks and smoke before the plane collided with a barrier and burst into flames.

One witness, Yoo Jae-yong, noted spotting a spark on the right wing moments before hearing a loud explosion. Another, Kim Yong-cheol, described “metallic scraping” sounds prior to a plume of black smoke rising from the crash site. These accounts highlight the chaos and terror surrounding the incident, which unfolded after the plane sent a distress signal during its descent.

The crash’s black boxes have been recovered, and investigators are examining the flight data and cockpit recordings to determine the precise cause. South Korea’s transport ministry confirmed a bird strike warning was issued before landing, with alternative airport options suggested to the crew. However, the flight proceeded to attempt landing at Muan.

Jeju Air has expressed deep condolences, with President Kim E-bae apologizing to the victims’ families and promising full cooperation with investigations. While the tragedy has raised questions about aviation safety, efforts are ongoing to provide clarity and accountability for the devastating loss of life.
