Two Florida inmates, Daisy Link and Joan Depaz, have managed to conceive a child despite never meeting face-to-face. Both are incarcerated at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on murder charges, and their unconventional relationship developed through communication via the prison’s ventilation system. According to Link, long hours of isolation led to deep conversations with Depaz, eventually fostering an emotional bond. The couple exchanged notes and small items through the vents, creatively using bedding materials to pass them along.

Depaz, expressing a long-standing desire to have a child, proposed the idea to Link, who agreed. Depaz described the process of transferring his semen using Saran Wrap through the air vent system: “It drops right into my vent… we had figured out a way to drop the line.” Link explained that she then used a yeast infection applicator for insemination, and after several attempts, she successfully became pregnant.

A paternity test confirmed Depaz as the father, and the child is now being cared for by his mother. Both parents remain in separate facilities but maintain contact with their child via video visits. Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center is investigating the unusual circumstances surrounding the pregnancy but stated there’s no evidence of misconduct or assault.

Reflecting on their situation, Depaz acknowledged the uniqueness of their story, remarking, “Not gonna lie, this is gonna go down in history.” Meanwhile, Link expressed optimism for her daughter’s future, saying she believes the child is destined for greatness.
