Djimon Hounsou, known for roles in Gladiator and Marvel blockbusters like Guardians of the Galaxy, has revealed that despite his acclaimed career, he struggles financially. Speaking to CNN, the two-time Oscar nominee opened up about being underpaid and the challenges of systemic racism in Hollywood. Hounsou, who has appeared in numerous big-budget films, expressed frustration at not receiving the respect or compensation he believes his work deserves.
Hounsou reflected on his early career, recalling how his breakout role in Amistad was both a blessing and a challenge. Despite critical acclaim, he felt Hollywood viewed him as an outsider, citing the lack of recognition during award seasons. After more than two decades in the industry, he admits he’s still navigating systemic issues that hinder fair treatment for Black actors.
Beyond acting, Hounsou remains dedicated to his roots, hoping to positively influence perceptions of Africa and African culture. He recounted his modest upbringing in Benin, where he was inspired by cowboy films he could only hear from the back of a cinema. This drive led him to Hollywood, where he has worked to shift narratives about his heritage.
Hounsou’s candid statements have sparked discussions about equity in Hollywood, particularly for actors of color, and shed light on the ongoing struggle for diversity and fair compensation in the industry.
