Grimes, the singer, has expressed her desire to change her daughter’s name to a symbol, although she acknowledges that the government does not officially recognize this unconventional choice. The daughter she shares with Elon Musk, originally named Exa Dark Sideræl, is now referred to as “Y,” “Why?,” or simply “?”.
In a Twitter post, Grimes explained the name change, saying, “She’s Y now, or ‘Why?’ or just ‘?’ (But the government won’t recognize that). curiosity, the eternal question, .. and such.” This revelation came alongside a rare photo of the child in a red onesie with green hair, mirroring Grimes’ own outfit. Grimes noted that she and Musk generally keep their daughter out of the public eye for privacy reasons, but shared this particular image as the child appeared “fairly unrecognizable” in it.
The couple’s daughter was born via surrogate in December 2021, a fact Grimes inadvertently disclosed during a Vanity Fair interview when the writer overheard the baby crying.
Grimes and Musk, whose relationship has been on and off, were reported to have split in September 2021, with Grimes confirming another breakup in March 2022.
The pair have previously made headlines for their unique approach to naming their children. Their first son, born in 2020, was initially named X Æ A-12. However, due to California’s legal restrictions against using numbers in names, they modified it to X Æ A-Xii. The child is commonly referred to as X.
