A man in India shocked doctors when they discovered a live three-centimeter cockroach inside his intestines. The 23-year-old patient visited the hospital complaining of indigestion and bloating after eating street food, and doctors initially suspected food poisoning. However, during an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, they identified the live cockroach. Dr. Shubham Vatsya, who led the procedure, explained how the insect was successfully removed using a suction device on the endoscope.
The patient may have unknowingly swallowed the cockroach while sleeping or from the street food he consumed. Dr. Vatsya noted that if the insect had not been removed, it could have posed a life-threatening risk to the patient. The discovery and subsequent removal left both doctors and social media users equally horrified, with many expressing their disbelief online.
One Reddit user humorously speculated that the cockroach must have fled the stomach acid and survived by finding a “crevice” to hide in. Others joked that cockroaches’ resilience extends even to surviving the harsh environment of human intestines. As unsettling as the situation was, it served as a reminder of how unexpected health issues can arise from seemingly ordinary experiences.
