A Chilean man vanished after his employer accidentally paid him 330 times his normal monthly salary. Usually earning 500,000 Chilean pesos (about $525), he was unexpectedly credited with 165 million pesos ($173,668.79) from his employer, Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos (Cial), a meat production company. When the company’s human resources department noticed the error, they quickly contacted the employee, who initially agreed to visit his bank the next day to return the funds.
However, when the following day arrived, the employee was nowhere to be found. The company tried multiple times to contact him through calls, texts, and even WhatsApp messages, but all attempts went unanswered. Instead, the man resigned via a lawyer, effectively “ghosting” the company. Faced with no alternative, Cial initiated legal proceedings, accusing the former employee of misappropriation of funds in an effort to reclaim the accidental payment.
Despite their legal actions, Cial’s efforts to retrieve the money were unsuccessful. Legal documents disclosed that the employee was informed the payment was in error, but he failed to comply. Police investigations also led nowhere, as authorities could not locate him.
With the equivalent of over 27 years’ worth of salary in his account, the former employee has not resurfaced since the incident. The story has captured attention globally, sparking discussions about what people might do if they were in his position.
