Initially working as a “black hat” hacker, he now operates as a “white hat,” aiming to protect organizations by identifying security vulnerabilities and combating cybercriminals. Speaking to VICE, he highlighted the ethical dilemmas and high stakes involved in his work, including ransomware attacks on hospitals that force life-or-death decisions about paying criminals.
Ransomware has evolved significantly, with hackers now demanding tens of millions of dollars, compared to the hundreds or thousands they sought decades ago. One recent attack demanded $70 million to unlock all affected systems, showcasing the immense scale of modern cybercrime. The hacker explained that while some scenarios, like taking over nuclear arsenals, are more fiction than reality, critical infrastructures like electricity grids and financial markets remain vulnerable.
Despite witnessing countless breaches, the hacker noted that his toughest moments are seeing essential services like hospitals paralyzed, forcing leaders to choose between ethical principles and saving lives. He described hacking as a continually evolving field that poses ever-greater risks to society.
