Casey Margolis, who played a small but memorable role in the 2007 film Superbad, recently shared how much he still earns from his brief appearance 17 years later. Margolis portrayed a young Seth, the character played by Jonah Hill, in a scene where he obsessively draws a series of inappropriate doodles during his childhood. Despite the role’s brief screen time, it has continued to pay off for Margolis, who revealed on social media that he still receives residual checks from the film’s continued success.
He mentioned that he was paid $700 per day for his role during filming, a significant amount for a child actor at the time. Even now, Margolis still earns periodic residual payments for the movie. He shared details of some recent checks, including one for $255, and another that grossed over $573 for various forms of media distribution like free TV, internet rentals, and DVD sales. After taxes, he took home around $365 from that particular check. While these residuals provide a nice supplement to his income, Margolis is quick to point out that they are not always substantial.
In a candid video, he explained that not all residual checks are as lucrative. Some payments can be as low as a few cents, with his smallest ever check netting him just $0.08 after taxes. Margolis emphasized that while these residuals can add up over time, they are not enough to live on by themselves. For him, acting is a passion, but it’s also a tough industry that doesn’t always provide a steady or substantial income.
Despite the ups and downs of his acting career, Margolis seems to have a good sense of humor about his situation. He often jokes about his role in Superbad on social media, and it’s clear that he embraces the quirky notoriety it has brought him. Though he’s moved on from acting as his primary focus, the residuals serve as a reminder of his contribution to a beloved comedy classic, and they continue to support him in small but meaningful ways.
