A terrifying incident unfolded for two Oklahoma Christian University students, Zara Hull and Kaylie Pitze, while on vacation in Cancun, Mexico when their drinks were reportedly spiked at a swim-up bar in their resort. Shortly after drinking water from the bar, both women fell seriously ill, leading to Zara being hospitalized. In a photo taken just after the incident, Zara and Kaylie are seen passed out, holding hands on the bar, showcasing the severity of their condition.
Zara described the experience to CBS News, saying, “I have never felt like that in my life. I was so heavy to the point where I could not lift up my head or anything. All of a sudden, I started having these seizing compulsions.” The situation quickly escalated, and Zara had to be taken to a private hospital, where her condition worsened, requiring her to be placed on a ventilator. The cost of her treatment was estimated at $10,000, and Zara has since been transferred to a hospital in Dallas, where she continues to recover but needs physical therapy to walk again.
The incident has left Zara deeply shaken, vowing never to leave the United States again. She expressed her disillusionment with the perceived safety of resorts, saying, “They say the resort is the safest place; don’t leave it. That’s not true.” The event has raised concerns about safety in tourist areas, particularly in places like Cancun, which are popular among college students.
As Zara continues her recovery, her family has set up a fundraiser to help cover the mounting medical expenses, with over $6,000 raised towards a $35,000 goal. The ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise unexpectedly during travel, highlighting the importance of vigilance and caution even in seemingly safe environments.
