John Stamos recently shared a story about his unusual experience with the Church of Scientology in the 1980s. In his memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, Stamos describes how he was approached by an acquaintance named Mia, who handed him a Scientology book and encouraged him to read it. As Stamos explored the church, he attended an “auditing session” at the Scientology Celebrity Centre in Hollywood, which he found to be “creepy” and reminiscent of a mix between Chateau Marmont, Disney’s Haunted Mansion, and a mental hospital.

During the session, he was asked strange questions about his thoughts on Scientology and its founder, L. Ron Hubbard. Stamos humorously recounted the bizarre experience, mentioning how he mimicked talking into an “old-timey telephone” using the equipment given to him during the session. His playful attitude didn’t go over well, and he was eventually told to leave because he was not “Scientology material.”

Stamos later explained on a podcast that his joking around and impressions were not appreciated, leading to his rejection by the organization. Reflecting on the experience in his book, he noted, “Apparently, I’m not Scientology material. Darn it.” Despite the peculiar encounter, Stamos maintains a light-hearted view of the whole situation.
