David Humplett, a social media influencer with millions of followers, is recovering in the ICU after being bitten by an Eastern diamondback rattlesnake during a livestream on December 18. The incident occurred in Dixie County, Florida, while he was searching for snakes in the wild. Humplett startled the venomous snake while peeling bark from a tree, prompting it to bite him on the leg. Shortly after, he told his viewers, “Welp, I’m cooked,” before seeking emergency medical help.
Humplett was airlifted to the hospital, where he received 88 vials of anti-venom. He described the pain as excruciating, comparing it to being attacked by an alligator. His wife, Emma Rynear, recounted the ordeal, expressing panic but maintaining composure to reassure him during the crisis. The bite left his leg severely swollen and purple, with Humplett fearing he might lose the limb.
Despite the life-threatening nature of the bite, Humplett credited his faith for turning the terrifying event into a learning experience. He referred to the rattlesnake as “the worst snake you can be bit by in Florida” and set up a GoFundMe page to cover his medical expenses and support his family during recovery.
Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes are among North America’s most venomous snakes, and their bites can be fatal without prompt treatment. Humplett’s ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of interacting with wildlife, especially in their natural habitats.
