LSU recently revived a controversial tradition by showcasing a live tiger, named Omar Bradley, in a cage during their game against Alabama, marking the first time since 2015 a tiger has been brought onto the field. The tiger, owned by Florida resident Mitchel Kalmanson, was driven onto the field in an enclosed cage, spotlighted briefly before being taken off. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry advocated for the revival, citing it as an homage to LSU’s past mascot tradition. However, the move sparked significant backlash, including protests outside the stadium and an online petition with over 27,000 signatures opposing the practice.

Animal rights organizations, including PETA, condemned the act as “shameful and out of touch,” arguing that the intense stadium environment can be stressful and harmful for wild animals. PETA called on LSU to end the tradition, stating that such displays are outdated and disrespectful to big cats. LSU’s decision also received scrutiny from other groups that pushed for more humane treatment of the animals used in university traditions.

However, Louisiana Surgeon General Ralph Abraham defended the display, asserting that extensive precautions were taken to ensure Omar’s comfort and safety. As a veterinarian, he vouched for the tiger’s well-being and said Omar was “comfortable around people.”

The game itself was less favorable for LSU, as Alabama defeated them 42-13, with Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe leading the charge. Despite the heated atmosphere and LSU’s efforts to boost morale with their tiger mascot, Alabama secured the victory, pushing LSU to a 6-3 season record.
