Mattel recently issued an apology after discovering an unintended link to a pornographic website on the packaging of its Wicked movie-themed dolls. The dolls, released in anticipation of the 2024 Wicked film starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, feature a URL on the box intended to direct consumers to the movie’s official website. However, a printing error led to the link “www.wicked.com,” which instead directs to an adult entertainment website.
Available since late September, the dolls were sold across major retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Target. Fans noticed the error after purchasing the Glinda doll, with many pointing out the mistake on social media. While other Wicked merchandise, like Lego sets, avoided this error, Mattel swiftly responded by advising consumers to either discard the packaging or cover up the incorrect link.
In a public statement, Mattel expressed regret, emphasizing the oversight as unintentional and advising parents to be cautious. They clarified that customers could contact Mattel’s customer service for further guidance. This incident, while humorous for some, highlighted the importance of meticulous checks in marketing family-oriented products.
