Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has threatened legal action against Google after the company complied with Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Sheinbaum is demanding that Google limit the name change to only the 22 nautical miles under U.S. jurisdiction, rather than applying it to the entire Gulf.
During a press conference, Sheinbaum mocked the decision by suggesting that the U.S. itself should be renamed “Mexican America”, referencing historical maps. However, she made it clear that Mexico will pursue legal action if Google does not amend the labeling on its maps.

In an official letter, Mexico’s government stated that “any reference to the ‘Gulf of America’ must be exclusively limited to the marine area under U.S. jurisdiction” and warned that “appropriate legal actions” would follow if Google failed to comply.
Google has yet to respond, but the controversy continues to spark international debate. Trump’s order framed the renaming as a way to “restore names that honor American greatness”, but Mexico argues that the move disregards international agreements and historical accuracy.
