Thomas Phillips, a fugitive from New Zealand, has been on the run with his three children since 2021, and despite a credible sighting in October 2024, authorities have been unable to track them down. Phillips and his children—Jayda, Maverick, and Ember—were last seen in a bushland area by pig hunters. This marks the first time they’ve been seen since disappearing after a court date in 2021. Although police have been searching the area, there has been no significant update on their whereabouts.
Military involvement in the search has been suggested, particularly from the New Zealand Special Air Service (NZSAS). However, experts like barrister Grant Fletcher have explained why this isn’t possible. The military is restricted from engaging in law enforcement roles due to the Commonwealth legal system, meaning the search for Phillips remains solely in the hands of the police. Phillips is now wanted for a series of crimes, including aggravated robbery and unlawfully possessing a firearm.
Phillips has been linked to criminal activity during his time on the run, including being caught on CCTV committing burglaries with his children in tow. The police suspect he has been using various disguises and has committed multiple robberies across the Waikato region. Despite the challenges, the police remain committed to finding Phillips and reuniting his children with their mother.
As the search continues, Phillips’ ability to evade capture has left many questioning how he’s managed to survive in the wilderness for so long with young children. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, as they believe the children are at risk and in need of protection.
